We traveled half a day to reach a stray puppy in distress and found her alone in the dry brush. She ran and hid from us, but we took our time, and as we fed her, she began to change.
Her name is a nod to the actress Julia Roberts, and to the way she devoured her food at the park.

A stray puppy was in distress, half a day away from us. All we had to go on was a call about her, and even once we reached the area, we still had to search. We kept getting closer, until at last we found her, alone in the dry brush. She looked so lonely, and so sad.
Up close, our first fear was that she was wounded, so we checked her over carefully. Thankfully, she was not. Trust was another matter. She tried to run away from us, slipping first between some old wooden boards, then hiding behind a few metal sheets by a wall.
So we took our time, and when we finally reached her behind the sheets, we lifted her out and carried her in our arms. It was time to go home. Then we looked up and saw a thin white trail across the sky. It felt like a sign that everything would be OK.
Before we left, though, she needed to eat. We gave her water and a meal there on the dry ground. She took the first mouthfuls from our hand, then went on to the bowl, and as we fed her and looked after her, her demeanor began to change. The puppy who had run from us now ate with our hands right beside her.
Next, we needed to check her health, so we took her to the vet. We had company while we waited our turn, and she spent the wait on our lap, wagging her tail. Then came the full tests, and when it was all done, we knew for certain that she was OK.
With her health settled, we took her to a park for an afternoon walk. She had already shown a good appetite at the vet, yet once we were there, she was hungry all over again. She devoured her food, and then, for a while, she played with us on the grass.
After the park, she needed a bath. By the time we got her indoors, she had become a lot more lively than before. We cleaned her up in the sink under the running faucet, and when the bath was done, it was time to dry her off, something she seemed to enjoy.
Afterward, her coat was clean and fluffy. The puppy we had found alone in the dry brush, the one who had run and hidden from us, now sat quietly between our hands with her eyes closed. When we filmed her story, we were looking for a family for Chewlia Roberts, a home where she would never have to hide again.
