For days he wandered the village roads alone and ran from everyone. When we found him, he stayed, and by the end of that day he was drifting off to sleep in soft blankets of his own.
His name is a nod to the singer Rod Stewart, for the roads he wandered alone and the long road trip we took together.

Several people from a village told us about a little puppy wandering the roads all alone. He had been out there for a few days, and nobody knew whether he had been abandoned or was simply lost. Whenever anyone came close, he ran. People had tried to feed him, but he ate only when nobody was around, and then he was gone again. We could not stop thinking about him, so we set off to find him, hoping we would find him in time.
We started where he had last been seen and searched until, at last, we spotted a tiny puppy on his own. It was him. We moved slowly so we would not frighten him. Until then he had run from everyone who came close, but this time he did not run away. We told him he was safe now, and he sniffed our hands.
Food came first, and he ate until he had finished every last bite. Then we filled a bowl with water for him, and he was very thirsty. When it was time to go, we picked him up and carried him to the car, and he was calm in our arms. He had a cozy spot of his own for the ride, and as we drove, we stroked him until, little by little, he relaxed.
Some way into the drive, we stopped for a break, and we had an idea. We set him on a skateboard and took our first ride together. To our surprise, he took to it right away, with the wind in his ears, and we had the best time together. When we set off again, there was still a long way to go, and he snuggled into our lap and fell fast asleep.
It was getting dark by the time we reached the vet, the first visit of his life. He waited patiently for our turn, and then the vet checked him over, ears, eyes and teeth, one by one. The thermometer was not his favorite part, but he took it well, and everything was fine. He was treated for parasites, and we left with special food and medicine to keep him well at home.
After the vet he grew sleepy again, but on the way home we stopped at a park, and even at night there was time to play. He ran across the grass, and belly rubs were his favorite thing. When he got thirsty, he drank from a tiny pond that had formed in the soaked grass, and we pressed down around it so more water would seep up for him. Then it was back to the games, and he had so much energy.
When we finally got home, we took him to the bath. A sink was just his size, and he stayed calm under the running water and the shampoo, as if he liked it. We rinsed him carefully, dried him one paw at a time and finished with warm air until he was fluffy. After a hug came bedtime, in soft blankets all for him. Earlier that day Road Stewart had been alone on the roads, and now he was warm, clean and loved, slowly drifting off to sleep.
