He was alone by a remote river in freezing wind, so afraid of us that he hid in the bushes. Soon he ate from our hand, and after about five washes the gray puppy turned out to be white.
His name is a nod to the actor Clint Eastwood, for a puppy who looked like a very strong breed and came out clean after about five washes.

A small puppy was alone in the cold near a remote river. That was all the emergency call could tell us, and we traveled 62 miles (100 km) to get there. When we reached the site, we looked for tracks, knowing only that the puppy was somewhere along the river. The current was strong, and for a young animal the river itself was a danger.
The area was large, and we searched it for quite a while until, at last, we found him. He was all alone, probably less than three months old, out in 32°F (0°C) and very strong winds. People in the area had been hearing him cry for weeks. He was so afraid of us that he hid in the bushes.
But he soon understood that we meant him no harm. We fed him right away, and he ate straight from our hand. He was starving, and most likely he had not eaten in days. Left alone in a place like this, he would have had little chance of surviving.
Then we set off for home, and he was still shivering with fear. He was so small, and he must have been through so much. He looked like a very strong breed, so either he was a lost stray or his owners had abandoned him in this remote place by the river, and we had no way of knowing which. What we did know was that he was gentle and good, and that he was safe now.
About 30 minutes into the drive, though, he vomited, and since it could have been his stomach, we made an appointment with the vet right away. He weighed only 6.5 pounds (3 kg). The vet treated him for internal parasites and asked us to watch him closely, and because he had fleas, we left with a treatment to use after his bath. We believed he would be all right.
When we finally got home, it was time for his bath. We were very gentle with him, and he was frightened and curious at the same time. At first we did not think he would need many washes. Then, as we rinsed him, the water carried away a black goo that looked like tar.
So we kept going and washed him around five times in all. By the end his fur had changed color, and the puppy who had come to us gray and black was white. Much of that gray, it turned out, had never been his own. After all that, he was hungry, and it was time for his dinner.
Later, he met a black puppy who was also staying with us, and the two of them played, ate and drank together, made a mess and loved a belly scratch most of all. In the end they fell asleep next to each other under the table. The puppy who had hidden from us in the bushes by the river was no longer alone. When we filmed his story, we were looking for a family for Clean Eastwood, and for his friend as well.
