Left at a construction site, he had spent a few weeks outside in the cold before we found him alone in a cardboard box. Within moments, he let us lift him into our arms.
His name is a nod to the singer Justin Timberlake, and to all the dust from the construction site that clogged our shower.

He had been left at a construction site, and the weather had been very cold, with snow, rain and wind. All we had to go on was an emergency call about a puppy abandoned there. That was enough, and we set out to find him.

He was not in the construction area itself, so we searched the ground around the site. Then, at last, we saw a cardboard box in the grass. He was sitting inside it. The person who called us had put him there and left him some food, but for a few weeks before that, he had been outside on his own.

After weeks on his own, he could easily have been afraid of us. He was not. Right away he let us stroke his head and rest his chin in our hand, and we took that as a good sign. We lifted him into our arms, and it was time to take him home.

In the car, he sat on a white blanket while we pieced together how he had come to be there. Most likely he had been born in a home, and his mother's family had not wanted to take care of him. We had been told he had a sister, but she was nowhere to be found. For a puppy so small, being left outside, away from home and from his mother, would have been a shock, and he had been through a lot in a very short time.

At our place he was curious and looked around, but first he needed a shower. He was afraid of the water, yet he behaved very well, and so much dust came off him that it clogged the drain. By the second round he was calm. We washed him from his tiny paws to his face, and a final rinse carried away the last of the construction site.

Once he was dry, the coat that had been dark with dust turned out to be a pale gold. He sat and looked up at us, clean at last. Then it was time for dinner, a proper one, and he ate with his face deep in the bowl.

When we took him to the vet, he had a careful checkup and weighed 9.4 pounds (4.3 kg), but one result was not what we had hoped for. His test for coronavirus came back positive. He was given an anti-parasitic paste, and we left with medicine to treat him. If all went well, he would be cured by the following week.

On one of our drives, he fell asleep on a lap with a hand resting on his head. It was a long way from the cardboard box in the grass where we had found him, and from the weeks he had spent outside in the cold. When we filmed his story, we were looking for a family for Dustin Timberlake.
