Cries from a warehouse

Somewhere in an abandoned warehouse, a small puppy was crying, and it had been raining hard for days. The call came from people in a distant city who had heard her desperate cries. The drive there would take more than three hours. We set out to find her.

Hidden between the floors

When we arrived, the area was silent, and the building was filthy, damaged and almost forgotten, with broken concrete and debris underfoot and wet trees all around. Then we heard her, and soon found signs she was close. She was hiding between floors the rainstorm had damaged, where we could not reach her, so we made a tunnel. Little by little, she let us bring her out.

One careful step

She was finally safe in our arms, soaked through, with mud and grime clinging to her little body, yet she accepted the first gentle touch. As we carried her away, we set her down on the ground for a moment to let her look around and decide for herself. She did not try to run. She watched us, and then she took one careful step.

Close at our heels

After the abandoned building, she needed fresh air, so we stopped at a quiet park with soft grass, open space and no dark corners. She stayed close as she explored, but her tail began to relax, and soon she wanted cuddles more than a place to hide. She sniffed the food we offered, yet staying beside us seemed to matter more, and every time we moved, she followed our legs. Back in the transport crate, the smaller space helped her feel calmer, and she took a few tiny bites before she rested.

Washing the day away

Next came the part she needed most. Her coat held rainwater, dirt and the smell of the old building, and it was full of fleas. At first she did not understand what was happening, so we kept one hand beneath her and washed her slowly in warm water, pausing whenever she grew unsure. She stayed surprisingly gentle, and when she was clean at last, we wrapped her in a soft towel and dried her with warm air.

So we stayed

Once she was dry, we offered her food again. She was hungry, but something still held her back: one tiny bite, then a long pause, and when we moved away, she often stopped eating. When we came back and stroked her gently, she felt safe enough to take another bite. She needed reassurance as much as food, so we stayed, and small bite by small bite, she ate her first proper meal.

Among gentle hands

When she had eaten enough, we lifted her into our arms for cuddles and the belly rubs she already loved, and then we made one last important stop. At the clinic she quickly became the little star: people stopped to pet her, and two little girls came over to meet her. The vet examined her from head to paw, treated the fleas and protected her against parasites. Only hours earlier, she had hidden from every movement.

A family of her own

That first day ended with her clean, fed and cared for, and with a trust that had come one careful step and one small bite at a time. Merrill Street has since been adopted. The puppy we brought out from between those damaged floors now has a family of her own.
