A baby girl lay curled up in a hole in a pile of rubble, too scared to come out even for food. Once we gave her a hand, she ate beside us, and the next day she slept on a blanket.
Her name is a nod to the singer Dolly Parton, and to the black patches over her eyes and ears.

A post on social media led us to a pile of rubble. There, in a hole among plastic bags and bottles, a baby girl lay curled up. We reached in to check on her, and luckily she was in good condition. But she was very scared.

Her fear kept her in the hole. We tried to calm her down with food, first holding a bowl close to her, then leaving it just outside, because we wanted her to come out on her own. She put her head out for the food, but the rest of her stayed inside.

When that did not work, we gave her a hand and helped her out. The puppy who would not leave the hole was now out in the open by an old wall, eating with her head deep in the bowl. We reached out to her, and she did not back away. She looked up at us instead.

Now, at last, we could take her home. We picked her up and carried her away from there in our arms, and for the drive we settled her in a carrier. She lay down inside and let us stroke her head. She was ready to go.

At home, the bath came first. She enjoyed the shower and relaxed so much that she lay down in the sink. Once she was clean, her coat turned out to be white, with black patches over her eyes and ears, and that night she slept on a towel of her own.

The next morning began with breakfast on the sofa. She ate from a bowl we held for her, close beside us, and afterward she lay down on a blanket and dozed off right where she was. There was still one more trip to make that day.

At the vet, she got her check-up, and her vitals were good. Soon it was bedtime again, and she went back to her towel. Only the day before, she had been curled up in a hole in the rubble, too scared to come out. When we filmed her story, we were looking for a family for Dolly Patchton.
