When we found him near a remote building, he was alone, and his two siblings had not made it. By bedtime he was no longer shaking, and he has since been adopted.
His name is a nod to the actor Keanu Reeves, and to the Golden Retriever in him.

Several puppies had been seen outside a remote building, and the people who spotted them could not tell whether their mother was missing or whether they had been abandoned. All we had was a call and a post on social media. We could not stop thinking about them, so we packed water, food and a blanket and drove straight there.
We parked as close as we could, knowing that every minute mattered and hoping we were not too late. At first there was no sign of the puppies, and the search began. Then, at last, we found him, all alone. His two siblings had not made it.
We picked him up as gently as we could and told him he was safe now. Water came first, but he only sniffed the bowl and barely drank. Food was another matter, and when he started eating, we knew it was a good sign. We let him eat at his own pace while his belly filled, then laid him on the blanket we had brought, right beside us in the car.
Our next stop was the vet, the first visit of his life. The vet lifted him with just one hand, and on the scale he was tiny. On the exam table he stayed calm, even for the thermometer, which was not his favorite part, and before long he was playing with our finger. When the deworming paste came, he ate it all up.
Afterward, when we set him back on the floor, he did something new. He began to explore, sniffing slowly at every corner of this new place, and with each step he grew a little braver. Soon he was even trying to play, and one of our shoes became his new favorite toy.
Then it was time to go home. For now he would stay with our rescuer, and there he had a bath in the sink, which was just his size. He stayed calm and patient under the warm water, as if he liked it, and as we rinsed out the shampoo, his eyes grew heavy. Before we had finished, he had fallen asleep.
Once he was dry, we made him a small corner of soft blankets, all for him. He was so tired by then that he could barely stand, and when we settled him back in with a few toys beside him, he was much calmer. He was no longer shaking. We covered him with one more blanket, and he was warm and tucked in for the night.
Earlier that day he had been all alone near a remote building, and he had lost his two siblings. By bedtime he had a full belly, a clean coat and a warm bed, and someone who cared for him. The puppy we named Keanu Retrieves has since been adopted.
