His name is a nod to the singer James Brown, for his brown coat and the voice that let people know he was there.

He had been abandoned near town, and for days he had been seen and heard screaming. No one had been able to get to him, and he was still out there on his own. When a woman let us know about the puppy, we set out to find him.

We found him at last, a small brown puppy alone in a bare corner at the foot of a wall, with nothing around him but dirt and dry leaves. Getting close to him was another matter. He seemed very afraid of people, and it took us hours to get near him.

Then, after all those hours, we held out a hand to him. Instead of running away, he came toward us across the gravel. He was the one who closed the last of the distance, and in that moment he showed us that all he wanted was love.

The moment we picked him up, he stopped screaming. He must have been through a lot over the past few weeks, alone in the cold. We held him close and cuddled him, and he lay still against our chest. Comfort, though, was only part of what he needed.

He was starving and had probably not eaten in days, and he was very thirsty too, so the simplest things came first. We set food and water down on the floor of the car, and he had his first proper meal right there, before we had even started for home.

We were about to head home when we noticed something about him was a bit off. We drove straight to the vet clinic instead. He fell asleep on the way, and the tests that began as soon as we arrived showed that physically he was all right, but that he had giardia. The vet calmed us down, confident that he would be fine, and we took him home ready to make sure he recovered properly.

A bath came first. We washed him very well, and wrapped in a towel afterward, he looked like a brand new dog. The night was only just starting, and he spent it like any puppy his age, curled in our laps one moment and underfoot the next, with another meal before he settled down.

Later that night he was curled up on a soft white blanket with a hand resting on his back. Earlier that same day he had been alone in a bare corner by a wall, where no one could get to him. He was around two months old, and he would stay with us until he had recovered completely. When we filmed his story, we were looking for a family for James Brownie.
