Very scared, he was tucked away in the corner of a deserted building, among broken glass and trash. After well over an hour with us, he calmed down and let us carry him.
His name is a nod to the TV host Conan O'Brien, and to the corner where we finally found him after searching every side of the building.

It began with a call about a homeless puppy in a remote area. The place we came to was deserted and in very poor shape, with broken bottles, glass and trash all around. It was no place for a puppy. We began to search the building, checking every side of it.
At last, we found him. He was tucked away in the corner. We approached him as gently as we could and showed him affection, but he was still very scared. We had seen this kind of fear before, mostly in strays who had never known people.
Food, we hoped, might help. We offered him some to show him that we meant no harm, but he would not eat and only licked it a few times. So we stayed with him for well over an hour, giving him the time he needed to get used to us.
The waiting paid off. After all that time, he grew calmer, and finally he let us lift him and carry him away from the broken glass and trash. For a puppy who had been so scared, that was a big step. From then on, he was in safe hands.
With the puppy in our care, we set off for the vet. The road was long and the hour was late, and then, on a dangerous highway, we saw another dog, a big stray who was lost and all alone. The stray followed us slowly until we were off the highway, and we made sure he was safe again.
We had almost reached the vet when we learned they were in the middle of an emergency operation. So we planned his visit for the next day and went straight home, where his first shower was waiting. He was very dirty, and we washed him thoroughly but gently, careful not to frighten him.
Afterward, we dried him off well, and he started cuddling with us. Before long he was lying on his back in a towel with his paws in the air, letting us hold him. Food was another matter. He still could not eat much, as he was not yet used to his new surroundings.
He had never had anything to do with people, so it would take time to train him. When we filmed his story, Corner O'Brien was staying with us while we looked for a family for him. That first night, soon after his shower, he fell fast asleep, curled up in a soft bed, a long way from the corner where we had found him.
