Small, underfed and soaking wet from a rainstorm, he was one of three abandoned puppies, and the only one we found. He did not run from us, and by nightfall he had begun to play.
His name is a nod to the singer Smokey Robinson, and to how soaking wet he was when we found him.

Three puppies had been abandoned, and they were on their own. We heard about them through a distress call, and answering it meant setting out on a rainy day. On the way we made one stop and met many other strays, then drove on, not knowing what we would find.
When we finally arrived, we saw one of them, a very small and underfed puppy, close to a crumbling wall. We closed in quickly, half expecting him to run off and hide. Luckily, he did not. He stayed right where he was and let our hand come close.
Now, more than anything, he needed food and water. We set a bowl down for him. He was so thirsty that we simply waited and let him take his time. Up close, we could see how scared he was, and how the rainstorm had left him soaking wet.
But he was not the only one. Locals had seen three puppies there, all without their mother. While he stayed by his bowl, we went looking for the other two and found nothing, though we searched more than once and planned to try again. When we came back, the small puppy was still waiting, and he ate as if he had been starving.
Then it was time to go. He was still afraid of us, but we hoped he would soon understand that we meant him no harm, and that a new life was waiting for him. The car was warm. On the way back, he covered himself with a warm blanket and settled into it.
We were almost at the vet when we stopped for a quick cuddle. Once we arrived, the exams began, and the vet gave him some treats as well, free of charge. He enjoyed them. Then came his medicine, and after that he started to loosen up, as if he had begun to understand that we meant him no harm.
At night we arrived home, and there he started to change. He became very playful, and when he wanted to play, we played along. Before dinner, though, he needed a bath. Out where we found him, the rain had soaked him through, but here the water was warm, and he loved the feel of it running down his belly.
It was finally dinnertime, and our little boy was hungry. There was time for one quick round of play first, and then he found his bowl and ate. Of the three puppies we had gone looking for, he was the only one we found, and he ended the day clean and fed. When we filmed his story, we were looking for a family for Soaky Robinson.
