Alone and very hungry, he was hiding in an old tire near a railway line when we found him. Before long, he was lying on his back on a rug, letting us rub his belly.
His name is a nod to the actor Ted Danson, and to the tire he was hiding in.

Somewhere near an overpass, beside a railway line where trains went by, a small puppy was hiding on his own, and he was very hungry. We had come a long way to get there, and once we arrived, the search began. We saw some signs of food, but nothing told us where to look.
So we looked everywhere, between the pillars, through the undergrowth and along a pipe sprayed with graffiti. Then luck found us. Against a concrete wall, half hidden in the weeds, lay an old tire, and inside it, looking back at us, was a small brown puppy. When we held out a hand, he reached his nose toward it and sniffed, happy to see us.
Even so, he was not yet ready to come out for good. He stepped out onto the grass for a moment, then jumped straight back in. While he stayed there, we searched the ground around him for any others, but there were none. He was alone.
With no one else to look for, we set a bowl of food down in the grass and let him eat in peace. He hardly looked up from the bowl. Afterward he lay down beside it and let us stroke his head. Then, back in his tire, he took our fingers in his mouth and nibbled at them, the first game he played with us.
When it was time to go, we lifted him out of the tire and carried him past the tracks. For the first time, he let us hold him close. At the vet, he lay flat on the steel table while we checked his vitals and ran all the tests.
After the vet came a bath. He let us wash him under the running water, then towel him off and dry him with a hair dryer. Before bed, he stretched out on his back on a gray rug, looked up at us and let us rub his belly. Not long before, he had been hiding in an old tire.
At the end of the day, he settled into a hanging chair with a soft toy beside him, clean, fed and no longer alone. When we filmed his story, we were looking for a family for Tread Danson, one where he would never need to hide again.
