Her family escaped a big storm without her, and we found her alone in the hay of an abandoned barn. The cold had put her life in danger, but after a few days in the hospital, she made it.
Her name is a nod to the singer Lana Del Rey, and to the hay in the abandoned barn where we found her.

When a big storm hit her village, her mother and siblings escaped, and she was left behind, completely alone. Word of her reached us through an emergency call about a puppy in distress. We did not know exactly where she was, but we got there as quickly as we could.
She had been heard screaming in one of the village's abandoned houses, so that was where our search began. We found nothing there. The place was full of strays, and we could only hope they had not hurt her. Then, as we kept looking, it seemed as if the big dogs were showing us the way, and we followed them to an abandoned barn.
At first we could not see anything, and the barn was hard to get into. Then we looked into one corner, and there she was, curled up in the hay. She was alive. She was also very scared, and even after we had lifted her out, she kept shaking.
Back at the car, the first thing on our list was to feed her, and she ate with a real appetite. We had no way of knowing when she had last eaten. Then she began to cry, and at first we were not sure whether she wanted to be held. The answer was simpler: she was still hungry, and she loved the baby milk we gave her from a bottle.
We thought the worst was over, but even with food in her, she began to act strangely. She was very cold, so we rushed her to the hospital, and on the way she grew weaker and kept getting colder. We stopped to fill a bottle with hot water, hoping it would warm her. Just as we were getting really worried, she seemed a little better and even wanted to play, but she was still cold.
At the hospital, her energy began to fade again, and the wait was long, because there were surgeries under way. When she started to grow cold once more, we warned the doctors. Once the examination began, her temperature turned out to be so low that it could not be measured. The doctors diagnosed hypothermia: she had been alone in the cold for so long that her health was now in danger.
The blood tests that followed were no better, and she was malnourished as well, so she had to go into emergency intensive care, where her chances of survival were not very high. Her life was now in the doctors' hands, and for a few days, all we could do was wait for the call. When it finally came, the news was good. She had made it.
Then it was time to go home, where a new friend was waiting for her: another puppy we had rescued while she was in the hospital. We kept her warm and well fed, and her appetite came back. The puppy we had found alone in the hay of an abandoned barn now slept in a pink sweater, curled up against the other puppy. When we filmed her story, she was about one to two months old, calm and quiet, and we were looking for a family for Lana Del Hay.
