A puppy in danger
He was in danger. Local people had reported a puppy in distress, and we got there as fast as we could. When we found him, he was lying on the gravel, and he was not moving. Whatever had happened to him, there was no time to lose.
Most likely the victim of a hit-and-run, he was lying on the gravel when we found him. A few hours later, at the vet, he was not scared, and the look in his eyes seemed to say thank you.
His name is a nod to the actor Tom Hanks, and to the look in his eyes at the vet, as if to say thank you.

He was in danger. Local people had reported a puppy in distress, and we got there as fast as we could. When we found him, he was lying on the gravel, and he was not moving. Whatever had happened to him, there was no time to lose.

He may have been hit by a car, and most likely the driver had not stopped. We checked him for any bleeding, lifted him gently and hurried with him to our car. Then we booked him in at an emergency vet clinic, and the drive began.

When we finally reached the clinic, he was still not moving. He lay with his eyes open, one of us with a hand resting against his face. The vet who saw him was one of the best, and we knew he was in the right place.

The vet examined him for fractures, and there was no bleeding, which was a very good sign. It had been only a few hours since we found him, and everything had happened fast. Yet he was not scared. Instead, we saw a look in his eyes that seemed to say thank you, as if he knew we were there to help.

He had to stay in special care until he got better. It was not long, though, before the vet had him back on his feet, and the news was good. There were no major fractures, and with time he would heal by himself. That also meant he was free to play and be with others.

As soon as he was well enough, we took him home. There he met another dog, the first since his stay at the clinic, and his little white tail would not stop wagging. Bath time was another matter. He was full of fleas, and he did not care for the water.

Once the bath was over, one of the two wanted to play, and that was how it began. They bonded so closely that they slept side by side, and both of them had their bellies rubbed. Somewhere along the way, the two puppies fell in love with each other.

The puppy we had found lying on the gravel, the one who was still not moving when we reached the clinic, now walked across the floor with his tail curled up. Every step showed how far he had come. When we filmed his story, we were looking for a family for Tom Thanks.
