His name is a nod to the singer Mick Jagger, and to the tail he kept wagging on the day we found him.

A small dog had been seen alone in an abandoned building. With only that report to go on, we set out on a rainy day, a new volunteer along to help us. We did not know what state we would find him in, or whether he would let us near him.

Finding him was not hard. The moment we arrived, though, he hid in his spot, a place of his own inside the house, and peered out at us from behind a door. For now, that door stayed between him and the strangers who had come looking for him.

Yet the hiding did not last. Once we were close, he turned out to be very attached to people, and his tail wagged constantly, which we took as a great sign. The dog who had watched us from behind the door now let us hold him.

Now that we had him, the first question was whether he was hungry. He turned down the water we poured for him, so we offered him food instead, hoping it would go better. It did. He was very hungry, and watching him enjoy his meal made us very happy.

A good meal was a start, but we wanted to be sure he was all right, so we took him with us to the vet. There he seemed a bit scared. We held him close and hugged him again and again. It was going to be OK.

Still, we could not tell by looking how a small dog on his own in an abandoned building had really fared, so we had every necessary test done. The results put our minds at rest. His vitals were good. Before we left, we gave him medicine, and a treatment against fleas just in case.

By the time we left the vet, it had been a long day. The small dog who had hidden from us in an abandoned building was now coming with us, and what mattered most was that the day had a happy ending. When we filmed his story, we were looking for a family for Mick Wagger.
